Do you think you paid too much for your last vacation? Maybe you didn't
think so until your know-it-all neighbor told you that he stayed at the
same hotel for half the price you paid AND got an upgraded room! Well,
you don't have to pay high prices for travel deals if you know how, when and
where to look. Whether you plan to travel first class or economy, this
article will give you some helpful tips on how to book your travel at
heavily discounted prices.
There are many ways to obtain lower rates on airfare, hotels, car rentals and cruises. Here are a few methods I have used to find great deals:
Plan in advance. Some travel advisors suggest travelers should wait until the last minute to book their vacation, especially airfare. That method does indeed work sometimes, especially for coach fares. If you are looking for big discounts on business class or first class tickets, they are long gone or are being held for frequent-flier upgrades. It works if you have a VERY flexible schedule and you can tolerate not knowing from one day to the next when you will take the trip. My personal taste is to have all reservations made at least 6 months in advance. Some hotels book as far as 3 years in advance! Booking that far in advance doesn't mean you will pay full price. It just means you will have to work at it. This strategy works whether you are staying at a 1-star hotel or at a 5-star destination resort and spa represented by organizations such as Relais Chateaux, The Leading Hotels of the World and Intercontinental Hotels.
Take advantage of AAA Travel Deals (American Automobile Association) Membership. AAA provide excellent trip planner tools both online and in their local offices. If you are not a member, join. It's well worth the yearly fee. Their coupons and guides are great for planning family vacations
Consider package deals. Booking flight, hotel and car in one package can save a bundle as well, but your options for travel times may be limited.
Check often. The first low fare might not be the lowest you find. Be patient a check for a few days before you book. Once you have decided where you are going and what carrier best suits your needs, checking takes 5 minutes.
Book it! When you are satisfied that you are getting a great deal, book it. If you don't your neighbor will have bragging rights for another year!
