Be aware that the view may be from a port-hole or traditional window.

Inside cabins are really cheap. Are they worth the savings?

If getting the cheapest rates on a cruise is your number one priority above else, then yes, they are worth the savings. Take the inside cabin. I advise against inside cabins. They are cramped and can begin to feel quite confining. Remember, there is no view. In an inside cabin, another thing to consider is that inside cabins may be located under noisy areas such as restaurants, casinos and galleys.

Balcony staterooms are the most expensive accommodations on a cruise ship. Are they worth the additional expense?

Book as far in advance as you schedule allows. You will have the best selection of cabins and locations. there are also plenty of incentives from the cruise lines to book early. They want to fill the ship to capacity as soon a possible and they will make some compelling offers plus sweeten the deals with complimentary upgrades and other benefits.

Will I save money waiting and booking last minute cruises?

While there are great savings on last minute cruises, the risks far outweigh the benefits. The selection is limited an cabin location may be in undesirable areas. If you plan to go the last minute route, be sure to be on the cruise line deck plan while talking with your travel agent or cruise line representative. Insist that they tell you the cabin number before you commit. If they refuse to do so, then do not make the reservation.

How do I get the cheapest prices on cruises?

You will always get the best all-around cheapest cruise prices by dealing directly with the cruise lines. Travel agents and third part reservation experts have their purpose and o a great job in helping their clients but I simply do not see the need to use them. The cruise lines have unadvertised specials, instant upgrades, discounts for senior citizens, active military and their families and veterans as well. Special prices and benefits are given to returning clients and travel partners.

Will I get the lowest price by booking online?

In most cases the answer is no. Remember to look at the cost of the entire package and not just the cruise itself.

The claims of discounts on cruise of up to 75% (even higher) are valid but there is absolutely a catch. As mentioned above, look at the cost of the entire package. Also be aware that these compelling rates are most likely for cabins located undesirable locations.

Are upgrades available like on flights and hotels?

Yes. Some automatic upgrades are used in marketing promotions. Book well in advance, dealing directly with a cruise line agent, and just ask for an upgrade. My experience is that they will gladly help you find a preferred room, even if it is not technically a class upgrade. Location and full ocean view are of prime importance.

Do I have to be seated with other passengers for meals?

That painful requirement has long passed on most cruise lines. I is best to call ahead to ensure you do not have to have assigned seating.

Do I have to leave the ship when it is docked at a port-of-call?

From there you can rent a car and tour the local countryside and return to the original port and wait for the nest itinerary or meet at another location. You can also book a partial cruise and depart at a prearranged location.
